SYDNEY SHOPS CROWDED
GREAT SPENDING BOOM LAST WEEK Sydney,. April 16. During the past week Sydney has had one of the greatest spending booms in its history. Many millions of pounds changed hands in wagers and luxury purchases. While records for totalfsator investment and yearling sales figures were toppled, city shops were crowded with luxury seekers and places of enler'ainmenl were crammed. Tota lisa tor figures for three days of the autumn racing carnival, which concluded yesterday, were nearly £450.000 —higher than for any previous fourday Easter meeting. Wagers laid with bookmakers brought the estimated betting total for the three days to more than £2.000.000. City retail firms report that the week’s spending, specially on luxury goods, increased oil the average 40 per cent, compared with the figures of the last iwelve months.— P.A.
