SEBASTOPOL’S GARRISON RUSSIANS PREPARING IO STORM GATES i Rec. 1.35 p.m. i London, April 17 Despite attempts to hold up the Ru - lans, the position of the Rumanians and* Germans garrisoning Sebastopol is .steadily deteriorating. General Yeremenko’s tanks, motorised infantry and cavalry arc preparing to storm the Baidar Gates, which is the hill pass guarding Sebastopol’s southern approaches. General Yeremenko has already swept around the coast planimg the Red Fla* on the southernmost lip of the peninsula. RUMANIAN PORT BOMBED Russian long-range bombers last night without loss made a mass raid on the Rumanian railway junction and river port of GuJati. af'er which explosions and many fires were observed. Flames were seen to spread over the greater part of the railway juncl lion where trains and dumps were ablaze. Violent explosions occurred on two ships in port. Reuter's Istanbul correspondent reports that several boatloads of German troops escaping from the Crimea landed on the Turkish Black Sea coast. Vichy radio stated that a Turkish ship carrying chrome for Germany was sunk in the eastern Mediterranean.
