ARCHIBALD PRIZE

CROWDS RUSH PICTURE SYDNEY ART GALLERY RECORD Sydney, March. 21. Controversy over William Dobell’s Archibald Prize winning picture of fellow artist Joshua Smith increased attendances at the National Gallery. Sydney, sixfold. The Archibald Prize of £SOO is the richest art prize in Australia, and is awarded for portraiture. Dobel’s winning exhibit was brilliantly executed but was described by many critics as a caricature. The gallery director (Mr Will Ashton) said that since th e Archibald Prize Exhibiton opened on February 22, 139,262 people had passed through the gallery turnstiles. The exhibition closed to-day. Last year’s exhibition attracted 22,444 visitors. To cope with the huge crowds the gallery was kept open daily to 6.30 p.m. during the exhibition instead of closing at the normal time of 5 p.m. Mr Ashton said that there had been no new developments in the lawsuit launched by Sydney artists Mary Edwards and Joseph Wolinski to obtain an order restraining the Art Gallery trustees from paying Dobell the prize money.
