MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL REFERENCE TO PASSING OF WELLKNOWN RESIDENTS The Waimea County Council held its monthly meeting in the Council Chamber to-day, the chairman. Councillor J. Corder, presiding. Other members present were: Councillors R. Teece, L. H. . Mytton, E. H. Jones, E S. Wratt, G. - Manson. and J. Hildyard. Councillors L. A. Higgins and J. Pugh were excused attendance. - Accounts totalling £5711 19 s 3d were passed for payment. The chairman referred to the deaths of tyo well-known residents of the county, Messrs Thomas Neale and - Thomas Newman. • Mr Neale had been a man of sound commercial knowledge and of high integrity and in past years he had held many important positions in the district and had given good service to the community. Mr Thomas Newman he described as one of the best men with horses he had ever known. Before the advent of motor cars Newman Bros, were well and favourably known for the very excellent service they had rendered to the travelling public by the very fine coach services they had run between Nelson and Blenheim, and Nelson and % the West Coast. By his death the district had lost a prominent pioneer. The sympathy of the Council was ex- *•- tended to the relatives of the late Mr , Neale and the late Mr Newman, coun-. r cillors standing in silence as a mark of respect to tlleir memories. DAMAGE FROM FLOODS The engineer (Mr W. Bullivant) in his report stated that a motor bridge on the Teal Valley road had been railed off as unfit for traffic. Renewal of •truss timber on the Pigeon Valley - bridge was being continued. This work : was likely to take about four or five months, but might have to be suspended for a time to allow urgent flood * damage to be repaired. Extensive flood damage was report- ;• ed to roads, bridges and river protection works in the Tapawera, Baton
and Glen Rae areas, and road surfaces * : and minor damage was caused by the ~ heavy rains and floods in other places. T: ;iThe engineer s report was adopted. Arrears of rates for the year ended _ 31st March, 1940, totalling £231 17s *5 ’ Jd * were written off, the majority being on properties which had reverted to _ the Crown or to the State Advances Corporation.
The chairman reported that representatives of the Council had met set- ; tiers on Rabbit Island recently and the Z settlers had agreed to undertake the work of clearing the camping and picnic sites on the island, a suitable arrangement having been made.
