MURCHISON
WELCOME TO RETURNED MEN A welcome home by Murchison residents to Dvr. A. K. Wilkins, S/Sgt. B. A. Reade, Sgt. Mac Petty, W. 0.11. Macormick, Ptes. M. Win, Adamson, G. Borcovsky and A. B. Berryman took the form of a social and dance. The function which was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, proved a great success and was greatly enjoyed by the very large crowd who attended to demonstrate their appreciation of the guests of the evening. Vocal items were contributed by Mrs L. Robertson and Mrs F. Newman, pianoforte solo by Miss J. Mills, and humorous recitation by Miss J. Broad. The chairman of the Murchison County Council, Mr M. E. Brown, extended a hearty welcome to the men, two of whom were repatriated prisoners of war, and thanked them most heartily for the part they had undertaken in the great struggle for freedom. He expressed the hope that they would all have a happy time with relatives and friends during their furlough, and that those who were not so well would soon be fit. Mr J. Todd welcomed the men on behalf of the R.S.A. and assured them the association would do all it could for them in any way. Mr Christian also welcomed the men. Apologies were received from Cpls. Ray Winfield, C. Hill, J. Boland and Ptes. D. FlintofT and L. Baigent. The men were accorded hearty cheers and musical honours. Sgt. MacPetty. W. 0.11. Macormick and S/Sgt. Reade replied on behalf of the men. Opportunity was taken to honour Ptes. J. Bruce and R. Whitnall. Mr Brown wished them God-speed and a safe return. Mr McLaren spoke on behalf of the R.S.A. and mentioned that A.C.I French, who was also on leave, was unfortunately held up in Wellington and was unable to attend. Mrs Hutchings, president of the Murchison W.W.S.A., presented the men with a parcel as a token from the citizens of Murchison.
Supper was dispensed by the W.W.S.A. committee. Dancing continued to the music of Milligan’s Orchestra, with extras by Mrs N. Lynch. The Monte Carlo prizes were won by Mrs Stobie and Mr Rail. Mrs J. Oxnam and Mr Gibson, Miss L. Fleming and partner and the Lucky Spot by Miss V. Wilson and partner.
The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
