TROOP MOVEMENT

ON LEAVE FROM MIDDLE EAST NELSON SOLDIERS ARRIVE TO-MORROW ARRANGEMENTS AT THE WHARF PROVISION FOR NEXT-OF-KIN Nelson soldiers who are now in New Zealand on leave from the Middle East will arrive in Nelson by to-morrow morning's boat from Wellington.

The following information regarding the time of arrival of troops at their destinations, and local arrangements, has been announced by the Army authorities. No civic reception will be held at the wharf, but the men will be greeted at the gangway and welcomed individually by the Mayor (Mr E. R. Neale), Mr H. Atm ore M.P., and the president of the R.S.A. (Mr U. R. L. West). The Regimental Bank, Citizens’ Band, and the City Pipe Band will be in attendance at the wharf to participate in the welcome.

ORDER OF DISEMBARKATION The steamer Matangi is due to berth at 6.30 a.m. Men from Takaka and other outlying districts will be the first to disembark, and will be taken by bus immediately to the Fighting Services Club for breakfast, and later dispatched to their respective destinations by service cars. Soldiers for the Waimea and other nearby districts will be the next to disembark, and will either proceed to their homes by service car or will be met by relatives. Through the co-operation of the Red Cross and the Automobile Association a number of private cars will be available in instances where no transport arrangements have been made by next-of-kin. Nelson city men will be the last to disembark.

ENCLOSURE FOR NEXT-OF-KIN To make the x*e-union of the men with their families as easy as possible the Army authorities have arranged to erect a barrier across a portion of the wharf to admit only next-of-kin and near relatives within the limits of the barricade. An appeal is made by the authorities to members of the pifblic not directly concerned with any of the returning men to x-espect the restriction which has been made in the interests of the men and their immediate families, and to comply with the request to remain outside the barrier. Admission to the enclosure will be permitted on the production of the telegram l’eceived by next-of-kin advising them of the men’s arrival. One gangway from the ship, leading into the enclosure, will be reserved for Army personnel. Ordinary civilian passengers will disembark by another gangway. CONTROL OF TRAFFIC Transport arrangements at the wharf will be controlled by the police, assisted by the Army. City Traffic Inspectoi*s, and the Nelson A.A. patrol officer. The approach tc the wharf from the Anchor Company’s offices and the Customhouse Hotel right down to the wharf will be reserved for the sole use of cars lent for ti*ansport of the men and of the cars for the next-of-kin. The cars for transport will be lined up on the left-hand side of the street facing the sea and the cars of next-of-kin on the right-hand side. Production of the telegram by next-of-kin will also gain admission for their cars to this area. Transport cars will assemble at the wharf at 6 o'clock.

Private cars can be parked on tho the entrances on the Tahunanui.jside of the Anchor Company offices and they will be controlled by the A.A- patrol officer.

Should the weather be wet, the Harbour Board has granted the use of a long wharf shed for those who are waiting.

It is expected that there will be a lai’ge attendance of the public at the wharf to welcome the returning men. FORMAL WELCOME LATER The Mayor (Mr E. R. Neale) explained to-day that he had instructions that no public official i*eception should be held within 48 hours of the men’s arrival. In any case, he pointed out, the men and their families would not relish being paraded on the wharf at such an early hour while any formal speeches were made—they would be much nfore anxious to see and greet their relatives and friends.

Regarding a more formal and public welcome later this would be considei*ed immediately, and the Mayor emphasised that when a civic reception was arranged those men who had returned to Nelson since the arrival of the First Furlough Party would not be forgotten. Wherever possible these small parties of men had been met, and information and assistance given where necessary, and they should be included in any general welcome given to men now back on leave.
