TAHUNANUI FIRE SERVICE
USE OF NELSON BRIGADE A meeting between the Nelson Fire Board and the Tahunanui Town Board resulted in agreement on conditions under which the services of the Nelson fire brigade would be available in the Tahunanui area. It was reported at last night’s meeting of the Town Board that the Nelson Fire Brigade Superintendent had carried out an inspection of the board’s district. Jt was" considered that there were sufficient fire plugs on the hill area to provide an adequate fire service with the use of hose provided under the Emergency Precautions Service. The provision of an adequate water service for fire fighting on the flat part Of the board’s area had also been considered and the engineer (Mr C. I. Kidson) had been asked to prepare an estimate of the cost of installing a, main through Murilai street.
The chairman (Mr C. H. Chamberlain) said the Town Board was indebted to the Fire Board for the agreement to make the services of the Nelson brigade available under certain conditions. He was sure that the residents of the hill area would be pleased to learn of the arrangement, as the water supply was available in that parts of the district. It was not intended to have the city brigade called for any fire and discretion in that matter would be exercised by the Tahunanui Fire Brigade and the members of the board only. The calls would be made by the use of a code word, which would prevent the Nelson brigade being called for any little fire. Mr C. P. Palmer commented that the Tahunanui Brigade could deal effectively with any incipient outbreak especially on the flat area. The chairman added that in the case of the Nelson brigade being called the cost of the call would be met by the property owner concerned, or in default, by the Town Board. The cost of calls would be in accordance with the Fire Board’s bylaws.
The Fire Board’s bylaws provide for the following payments for outside the Nelson fire district boundaries: on land, £lO for the first hour and £5 for each succeeding hour; on ship, £ls for the first hour and £7 10s for each succeeding hour.
