BURNT TO GROUND

TAKAKA DWELLING DESTROYED

In the early hours of Tuesday morning the residence of Mr and Mrs L. Swann, situated near the junction of the West road. Tabaka, and the Ilamama road, was totally destroyed by fire. Awakened by the noise of the fire the occupants hastily escaped in their night attire, and in a very short time the sixroomed house was reduced to ashes.

Nothing was saved and the occupants were fortunate to escape with their lives. The origin of the fire is unknown, but as the flames travelled from the rear to the front it is assumed that the fire started in the back part of the house. As the house was four miles from Takaka there was no water supply, and with the help of two neighbouring families, the owners worked hard to keep the fire from spreading to the outbuildings.
