SUPPRESSION OF OPIUM
MOVE BY UNITED NATIONS Melbourne, Feb. 5. Suppression of opium smoking and the production of opium for smoking purposes in all Commonwealth territories reoccupied from Japan had been decided upon by the Federal Government, the Minister for Trade and Customs, Senator Keane, stated at a press conference. Britain, the United States and the Netherlands had already announced that a similar ban would be enforced in their- territories, and the Australian authorities would act in full collaboration.
The Royal Netherlands Government had indicated that it would abolish the Netherlands opium monopoly and would make curative opportunities available to addicts.
