BRIEF NAVAL CLASH

GERMAN UNITS DAMAGED OFF FRANCE (Rec. 10.0 a.m.) Rugby, Feb. 6. An Admiralty communique states: “While carrying out a sweep off Isle de Vierges. north-west coast of France, early in the morning. Allied forces of the Royal Navy under Commander B. J. Croix, encountered an enemy force consisting of one Elbing class destroyer and several minesweepers. During a brief engagement several hits were seen on the enemy destroyer bcfoi-e it escaped at high speed under-cover of a smoke screen The remainder of the enemy force retired inshore but before they reached safety one minsweeper was set on fire and another was seen to be abandoned. Our ships suffered neither casualties nor damage.”
