FALL FROM LAUNCH
APPARENT TRAGEDY Whangarei, Feb. 5. Falling overboard from a launch of which he was the 'sole occupant, a half-caste Maori, Jack Pook, about 30, a married man with one child, was drowned in the Arapaua River last evening. Member of a well-known Kaipara family of 23 persons. Pook recently purchased the launch and last evening took some Maoris from Pahi down the Arapaua River, which is a stream running into Kaiparo harbour. He left them at Karakanui, a native settlement, and continued on his way to his home further down the river.
Shortly afterwards the Maoris noticed the launch circle and then go ashore on the river bank. They rowed a punt to the place. They found that the engine was still running and there was no trace of Pook. who. it is believed fell overboard when hoisting a sail.
