RABAUL AND WEWAK BOMBED SYDNEY, This Day—Allied aircraft are keeping up their attack., on the. key Japanese bases of Rabaifi (New Britain) and Wewak (New Guinea). Fhesh strikes are reported by General MacArthurs communique to-day. Solomons -based medium and heavy bombers with lighter protection encountered only weak Japanese air opposition in their latest attacks on Tobera and Vunakanau aerodromes at Rabaul. Four Zeros were shot down in combat for the loss of two Allied planes. At Wewak a 3000-ton vessel way left burning. Five barges were sunk two float planes were destroyed or damaged. Our fighters also shot do\Vn a Japanese bomber. No enemy air interception is reported. At. Hansa Bay, further to the south-west on the New Guinea coast, a 1000-ton freighter, a coastal vessel and nine barges were sunk. The heaviest air attack recorded by General MacArthur’s communique to-d,ay was at Cape Hoskins, New Britain, where our escorted heavy bombers dropped 167 'ot bojpbr s ia a -day raid.
