THEY DEPEND ON US
Jim: Look, here, Bob, are the British people really short of food? Bob: They’re not starving, if that’s what you mean by short of food. They’re getting enough just enough to enable them to carry on doing their jobs. But they’re getting only a fraction of'what we New Zealanders get. Jim: You mean the British ration of only 1/2 worth of meat a week, and 2oz of butter, and so on. It doesn’t look like enough to me when I compare it with what we’re used to. Bob: Well, with the supplies that have been getting to Britain it’s as much as their Ministry of Food can allow them. It wouldn’t do to have plenty of food for a week and then none for a month. Jim: But it’s a mighty small ration get, considering the job they’re doing in their munitions factories. And they’ve been through the blitz and they are still being bombed. Bob: That’s why it’s sp important for us in New Zealand to send all the meat and butter we can to the people of Britain. They’re working under tremendous war strain, and their ability to stand the strain is conditional on them getting enough of the right kind of food. On their work in the factories over there depends the success of the whole Allied campaign. Jim: So it comes to this. We rely on them to go on producing the weapons to defend us, and they depend on us to supply the food they must have if they are to do the job*
