LETTERS FROM SOLDIERS

“TOO MUCH WINE FOR ONE HOUSE” Letters now arriving from soldiers in Italy make reference to the seemingly prodigious quantities of wine stored in the cellars of many Italian houses. Corporal Wynne McLaren, of Nelson, said the Italians in one small town reported that the Germans had taken away all the wine. However, members of his unit found 3000 gallons of very good Wine in one cellar and did their best to liquidate the whole supply. “It was far too much wine for any one household to have in store,” he added. Corporal McLaren also stated that they had succeeded in securing turkeys to add to the menu.

“A REAL DINKUM APPLE PIE” Driver Gilbert Webby, son of Mr and Mrs S. R. Webby. Washington Valley, in a letter (written before Christmas) received in Nelson yesteraav told a further story of his unit’s interest in poultry. For a long time in the desert he had a hen which lived and laid regularly on his truck. Transferring to Italy his unit had collected a pen of eight hens and three turkeys whose fate was to be sealed at Christmas. He commented on the cultivation of the hilly slopes in Italy and on the number of women who were following the plough. “We're getting plenty of apples now and to-night we had a real dinkum apple pie with tinned cream," he added.
