JESSIE’S DAY OUT

1 expect you have seen in the paper articles about the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs, which most of the schools entered for. I trained a calf, Jessie, for it and she won first price at Orinoco but at Ngatimoti she didn’t get any prize, as she was too small for the judges’ liking. One Friday fairly near the end of the term we all had to take our pets to school. I took Jessie and she had to walk the l\ miles to and from school. When she went to the judging she rode in state on the back seat of the car. All the children took a pet and there were five dogs, three lambs, two goats and my calf. Our teacher took our photographs and when we were just ready the dogs started to fight and it was quite a while before we could get ready again. —Heather Whelan, Orinoco.
