NAZI INTRIGUE IN ARGENTINA
THE scathing report on Axis activities in Argentina,. recently published by the State Department in Washington, will cause no surprise to those who have been following developments in the turbulent South American republic. The sinister Nazi methods are flourishing as strongly as ever, and the Argentine Government is busily trying to bring her neighbours into opposition to the PanAmerican movement sponsored by the United States. Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia seem to have already acceded to her blandishments, and even Uruguay, where the democratic tradition is strong, is reported to be wavering.
The root cause of Argentine opposition to the Allies seems to lie in the over-ambitious policy of the republic, which aims at seizing the leadership in South America, and resents the paternal guidance of the United States. It will be remembered that at the Pan-American Conference two years ago Argentina ostentatiously . refused to align herself with her neighbours, and took Chile with her. The Nazis, with their instinctive capacity for fishing in troubled waters, long ago saw the opportunity of capitalising on Argentine feeling, and have built up in the course of years a most efficient system of propaganda and espionage. The position is particularly galling to Great Britain, which has for many years given Argentina favoured treatment in trade, sometimes at the expense of her own Dominions.
The fact that Argentina is prepared to take such a bold line when the Axis powers are facing certain defeat shows how strong Nazi influence must be in the Government of General Ramirez. Possibly this is an attempt to insure against the future, for Argentina has long been marked out as a haven of refuge for the Nazi leaders when the inevitable collapse comes. We are not sure, however, that they will find permanent asylum even there; for though the patience of the Allies may be as long as a summer’s day, their arm is also as long as a winter’s night.
