ALLIED FORCES IN ITALY
CERVARO CAPTURED GERMANS WITHDRAW Rugby, Jan. 11. Cervaro, two miles northwest of San Vittore, and the last defensive position before Cassino, is reported by Algiers radio to-day to have been captured. Snow in the high land and mud in the valleys again interfered with land operations yesterday, says a correspondent. Fifth Army troops have been able to complete the occupation of Mount Porchio, where yesterday the Germans were holding the eastern slope. They also consolidated their positions on Mount Chaiai, south-east of Cervaro, and attacked another height, Mount Piper ni. The Germans have withdrawn the bulk of their forces from the forward defences covering Cassino, on the Fifth Army front. Patrols pressing along the road have found abandoned German rifles and machine guns. It is thought that the Germans will now concentrate on holding the last obstacle before the Allied troops, a 1500 ft. peak on the south side of the road which dominates all approaches to Cassino from the south and east.
