TAXI ON FIRE

DRIVER SAVED BY POLICE Sydney, Dec. 30. Clothing was flung from windows by residents of a flat in Campbell Parade. Bondi, to smother petrol flames which threatened to envelop a taxi-driver. The carburetter of the taxi engine had exploded and caught fire and petrol splashed on the sleev e of the driver. Thomas Collins, aged 47. Police and several soldiers went to his aid „nd smothered the flames with the clothing thrown by the flat residents. They then extinguished the fire in the taxi. Collins’ left arm was severely burned. Although in great pain, he wanted to drive himself to hospital, but was dissuaded. An Eastern Suburbs ambulance took him to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
