WORK IN VACATION
FIRST STUDENT’S APPEAL . Auckland, Nov. 25. The first appeal in respect of a student who had been directed to essential work during the summer vacation, was heard by the Auckland Manpower (Industrial) Committee yesterday. The appellant was Mr E. W. Friedlander, acting on behalf of the father of Kenneth Hugo Friedlander, who had been directed to the Westfield Freezing Company. Representing the manpower officer, Mr R. Lydford said that Friedlander was 18£ and was a first-year medical student. On November 11 he was directed to Westfield to start work on November 15. The direction followed the instruction from the controller of manpower that university students and secondary school students were to be directed to essential employment during their holidays, owing to the exceptional position in seasonal work. Mr E. W. Friedlander said that during the year the youth had been almost continuously indoors studying medicine. He was not afraid of work, but for the sake of his health it wa. c asked that he be given employiper in the open air. The appeal was dismissed.
