WAKEFIELD SCHOOL

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS The Wakefield School Centenary Committee has arranged a programme of celebrations for 11th, 12th and 13th December. Memorial gates at the school are in the course of erection. Their design is modern and attractive, with a panel fence of plaster finish curving back to inner gate posts. The double gates will be of iron construction. The dates 1843 and 1943 will be inscribed on the gate posts in scalloped panels. The contractor for the gates is Mr G. Robertson, and for the concrete work, Mr J. E. McPherson, both of Wakefield and old boys of f the school. The celebrations will open on Saturday, 11th December, with a procession headed by the Wakefield Band, followed by past scholars, decorated bicycles, prams, billy carts, pets, schoolboys and girls, and people in period costumes. Upon arrival at the school the school bell will be rung by' the oldest committeeman, the National Anthem sung, and an address of welcome given by the school committee chairman.

The roll up to 1882 will be called by the oldest past school mistress and those whose names are read out will take up positions before the gates. After several addresses the oldest Old Boy will cut the ribbon on the gate. At the afternoon tea to follow a birthday cake of three tiers and 100 candles will be cut by the oldest Old Girl of the school, and the children will present a programme of folk dances. The band will play selections and old costumes and photos will be on display. On Sunday afternoon a combined Church service will be held in the school grounds when the ministers of the various churches will take part in the service.

On Monday night a Centennial Ball will be held to wind up the celebrations.
