DIRECTLY AIMED AT JAPAN

INVASION OF GILBERTS (Rec. 10.35 a.m.) London, Nov. 24. The American invasion of the Gilbert Islands marks the beginning of a new drive aimed directly at Japan across the Central Pacific, the United States Secretary of the Navy. Colonel Knox, stated to-day, according to a Washington message. He explained that the drive had two immediate strategic objectives: Firstly, to drive the enemy from Japanese-mandated islands and secondly to shorten by hundreds of miles the American supply lines in the South-West Pacific. He added that so far no elements of the Japanese Fleet had appeared to oppose the landings on the Gilbert Islands. He believed the nearest Japanese fleet of any strength was at Truk.
