NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

CONCLUDING BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING The Nelson Education Board concluded its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, with the Hon. W. H. McIntyre in the chair. The National Council of Primary Production asked for the assistance of certain school pupils in connection with the 1944 harvest. The board agreed to permit assistance on the same terms as last year. The Tapawera committee extended an invitation to the board to attend its jubilee celebrations on Friday, sth November. • The Post and Telegraph Department was granted the use of 15 feet of road frontage at Upper Moutere for additions to the building. After hearing a report by Messrs F. A. Hamilton and F. Carling on the Upper Takaka committee’s request for additional accommodation, the board decided to ask the Public Works Department to provide accommodation. The board resolved that extension of the transport service to cater for two pupils desiring to attend the Takaka District High School was not justified. The Waimea Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club was granted £5 towards incidental expenses. MEMORIAL GATES AT WAKEFIELD Mr J. G. Wilkenc reported that the Wakefield committee had decided to erect memorial gates at the school to celebrate the centenary of the school. The cost would be £4B, and he asked if the board would assist financially. After divergent views had been expressed by members it was decided to grant £lO to the committee for incidental expenses. A letter from the Motueka committee asking for the inauguration of a transport service from Hau was deferred. The Ngatimoti committee asked for a service to Hau to cater for pupils desiring to attend the District High School at Motueka. It was left to the representative of the board for the district and the secretary to interview the parents to discuss proposals. TEACHING APPOINTMENTS The following appointments of teachers were made: Hampden Street, infant mistress: Mrs G. M. Cook. Motueka, assistant mistress: Miss C. E. Hudson. Murchison, assistant mistress: Miss M. M. Bartlett. Spring Grove: Mrs E. R Woodhead.
