LOWER MOUTERE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Scptmeber meeting of the Lower Moutere Women’s Institute was not so well attended as usual, a number of apologies being received. The motto for the month “As the sun rises in the east so let our patience be renewed with the dawn” was briefly commented on by the president. The meeting stood in silence to express sympathy with a member who had recently suffered bereavement. Th e treasurer reported that the Snowball competiion had resulted in a substantial sum being raised. Invitations to attend birthday parties were received and good wishes sent as it was impossible for members to attend in person. Mrs Wise was appointed delegate to the Federation Council meeting to be held at Tahunanui. It was explained that last month’s competition, “Something new from something old,” had resulted as follows.- Mrs Woodley 1, Mrs Mcßrydie 2, Mrs Tarleton 3. An old treasure was the roll-call and some very interesting articles were shown. Shoulder sprays were sent to two members unable to be present, whose birthdays had occurred during the month. The competition, best flower, was won by Mrs Boyes, with Mrs Mcßrydie second, while Mesdames Harding and Rosenberg tied for third place. Original verses on a variety of topics were read by members and Mrs Palmer read a humorous poem on the Women’s Institute by a member of the Wakefield Literary Society. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Mcßrydie and Tarleton. Read- | ings were given by member# from a manuscript collection of Pioneer Tales compiled by Lower Moutere Institute. Members packed a hamper for the Nelson Fighting Services Club, to be dispatched by Messrs Newman I Bros, who were heartily thanked for carrying it gratis. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
