HUNDRED YEARS AGO TO-DAY

A NELSON CHRONOLOGY ) 30th June, 1843: A public meeting was held for the purpose of impressing on the Government the necessity of taking steps to ensure the better protection of life and property in the Nelson Settlement. —“Nelson Examiner.” Some readers have wondered at the variant spellings of such words as “Wairau,” “Rangihaeata.” “Rauparaha” and even “whare” in the entries in the chronology. They are retained because these were the spellings used in the documents from which the extracts are taken. Some of these, such as diaries, were written by highly-educated early settlers but, as they did not see Maori written to any extent but only heard it spoken, they tried to interpret it phonetically—as it should be interpreted—but with different results.
