Fresh indications of British preparations in Syria for a possible thrust against the Aegean islands or the Balkans are reported by Rome radio. The whole of Syria is under a state of siege, says the radio. Troop concentrations are being carried out in the north, and the northern frontier with Turkey has been declared a zone of military operations to a depth of 60 miles Civilians and foreigners are forbidden to enter this area. Similar measures have been taken along the Lebanese coast. Berlin reports that a great Allied transport fleet was massed in Bizerta harbour to-day. Large ships especially equipped for landing operations reached Gibraltar yesterday and left again immediately for the Mediterranean.—P.A.
