TAKAKA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING RIVER PROTECTION WORK At the monthly meeting of the Takaka County Council there were present: Messrs A. H. Rose (chairman), T. Manson, J. W. Page. R. W. Sparrow. P. V. Langford, and G. E. Boyes (en gineer). Leave of absence was granted to Councillor N. Walker. Accounts totalling £551 19s Id were pa.ssed for payment. Mr E. J. Sixtus advised that the Canaan track was in need of repairs. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer with power to act. The Public Works Department wrote with reference to the Takaka river protection, advising that authority for £3OO (£2 for £1) had been given for the work to be carried out by da v labour. A letter was received from the Marine Department in connection with the reclamation of certain mudflat land at the mouth of the Motupipi river and the formation of a public reserve under control of the council. It was decided that the engineer supply the required information to the Marine Department and obtain an estimate of the cost of surveying the adjoining land. The Census and Statistics Department wrote asking for a return of the build ing permits issued during the year ended 31st March, 1943. The engineer stated he had complied with the request. GENERAL Councillor Langford drew attention to the fact that the road leading to Mr E. Petterson’s property at One Spec, Anatoki, was in need of repairs. Referring to the bulldozer operating at the Takaka river protection works above the Long Plain bridge, the same councillor stated that, in his opinion, a channel should be opened by the bank adjoining Hitchcock’s property. The council decided to appoint a committee consisting of the chairman and Councillors Page and Langford, with power to act, in matters of urgent river protection. The engineer was asked to report on the state of the road leading to Mr Petterson’s property at Anatoki. Councillor Page reported that on the Takaka-Tarakohe main highway metal ling was required at certain sections, and ditches needed cleaning. The engineer was directed to interview the property owner concerned and to request him to clear the frontage in order that the ditches may be cleaned. The chairman reported on the conference in Nelson with members of the Soil Conservation Committee and gave details of the proposed catchment area of Nelson. Councillor Sparrow reported that the clearing of frontages on Longford road was still unsatisfactory and pointed out that further clearing was required to comply with the Public Works Act. The engineer is to contact the property owners concerned and ask them to complete the clearing of frontages and also to repair the damage done to th' footbridge by fire.
