NEW ANTI-TANK GUN
MATCH FOR ROMMEL’S MOST MODERN WEAPON ENEMY STILL WITHDRAWING HARASSING TACTICS BY R.A.F. (Rec. 1.40 p.m.) London, Mar. 9. The important number of tanks captured from Rommel during his abortive assault on 6th March and their description as given in today’s communique is according to a correspondent at Allied headquarters striking confirmation of the facts that the German Commander-in-Chief employed the most modern material which for all its weight of armour can be met and destroyed at even fairly long range by the new British quick-firing anti-tank guns.
The correspondent states that the mark 4 special weighs 42 tons and carries a 75mm gun protected by 50mm armour in the body and 70mm in front. The mark 3 special possess a very useful 50mm short-barrel gun as well as a machine-gun.
Monday was quiet again, the message adds. The enemy continues his withdrawal to high ground from which he launched h?s attack on Saturday. No fighting took place, but the Air Force is very active harassing the retreating Axis forces. Sweep after sweep of Spitfires was carried out over the battle area attacking enemy vehicles and tanks.—P.A
