SALE OF POTATOES

PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT SEVERAL HUNDRED TONS FROM NELSON DISTRICT The unsatisfactory conditions under which the potato growers of the Nelson district have been selling their crops this year has received consideration by the Nelson Primary Production Council which has been negotiating with the Government for about two months in an effort to improve the position. It was learned to-day that the Government has decided to take several hundred tons of potatoes from the Nelson district this month and the arrangements made for their purchase will ensure the growers of the scheduled price of £l4 per ton for the period up to; the end of February. All sales by growers will be made to the merchants from whom the Government will take the supplies it needs. Therefore growers Who now have crops ready for digging should approach the merchants who, under the Government purchase arrangement are now in a position to i receive quite large quantities. It is pointed out that the quality i of the potatoes will be a condition of i sale as only first grade are required, i They must be white, without \gprm jor other blemishes. The result * of 1 this decision will ease the position | for growers in the district and jjurill ■ clear the potatoes now ready te be | harvested at the price set by .the | Price Tribunal.
