DARLAN’S POSITION
FRENCH PEOPLE CONFUSED PRO-ALLIED FERVOUR DAMPENED NORTH AFRICAN ARMY (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) New York, Nov. 25. The “Christian Science Monitor” correspondent on the French frontier says although Allied successes in North Africa have encouraged the French people’s bitter fight at home, Allied acceptance of Admiral Darlan has confused the French in France and made them easier victims of Vichy robbery. This anxiety is not limited to De Gaullists, but is rooted amongst the broad masses of which the articulate section expresses the opinion that the military advantages which General Eisenhower attributed to the acceptance of Admiral Darian are outweighed ]py definite military disadvantages. Collaboration with Admiral Darlan has considerably dampened pro-Allied fervour in French North Africa, resulting in General Giraud’s inability to call over 12 per cent .of the French North African Army to his colours.—P.A.
