RETURNED SOLDIERS MINISTER S REPLY TO QUESTION j ' From Out Own Parllamentarv Reporter I i Wellington, Oct. 22. It was incorrect to suggest that soldiers returning from active service i overseas were turned adrift, said the | Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) in the House of Representatives yesterday in j reply to an urgent question by Mr F.! W. Doidge (National. Tauranga). The: Minister said that before these men : were placed on leave without pay every ! care was taken to ensure that their! pension or social security benefits were j settled. There was authority under regulations to place any member of the j SeconJ N.Z.E.F. on leav without pay. When a soldier was suffering from tuberculosis attributable oi in any way aggravated by war service he was entitled to a war pension and all necessary treatment. Where it had been discovered that men had contracted the disease before going into camp and it had not been aggravated by military service, they were entitled to be dealt ! v ith under the provisions of the Social : Security Act. The Minister added that : where hardship existed he would be pleased to investigate those cases.
