PET BIRDS NESTING

We have two little rabbits now. called Dutchy and Yankee, and we give them armsfui of grass and thistles to eat. One of the canaries is sitting on five | eggs and they will hatch out on Friday. 1 We have a pair of zebra finches too and they are sitting on some eggs. They; fly very fast and I call them Spitfires. They make a sound like Morse, don’t tl.ey? OUTSIZE IN RATS On Saturday I was helping Dad to clean out the fowlhouse and when Dad lifted a board up we saw a lot of straw and in the straw was a huge rat. i I held the board while Dad killed the ! rat with a shovel. The rat was 1 foot 4 inches long and had taken four bantams’ eggs under the board into its nest. Last night I had a party for my tenth birthday. Two of my friends were there and we had a great time. I; had a lovely big cake with an aero- 1 plane made from pink icing on top. I received a nice box of paints with two brushes, a big book, a glider, diary, parts for my Mecanno and three shillings and sixpence. —Lynr Daly, Nelson.
