WAIMEA COUNTY
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING ENGINEER’S REPORT The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council was held in the Council Chambers to-day when those present were Councillors J. Corder (chairman), R. Teece, L. If. Mytton, L. A. Higgins, E. H. Jones, E. S. Wratt, G. Manson, J. Pugh and J. Hildyard. Accounts amounting to £1579 19s 8d were passed for payment, e In the Stoke riding the Engineer recommended the clearing of willows on Champion road, Richmond, to improve visibility rather than move an existing culvert at an expenditure of £3O. The matter was deferred, the Engineer to ascertain the amount which the two settlers concerned were willing to contribute towards the cost of the work. The Engineer reported that he had investigated the proposal to widen the switch-back on the Hope back road. He estimated that the cost of widening the whole stretch of road by four feet would cost £213, the high cost being due to the distance which spoil had to be taken.
Councillor Hildyard stated that he did not consider that the improvements suggested would make the road any safer for driving stock. The Urafflc on the road at present was not sufficient to warrant the expenditure.
Councillor Teece agreed with this view* and on the motion of Councillor Jones the matter was deferred, the road to be adequately sign-posted. In the Wangapeka riding the Lamb Valley road had been inspected and erosion on the left bank of the Hope river at the Lamb Valley bridge had been found to need a considerable amount of boulder crate work and this had been arranged for. Complaints had been received from the day man in the Moutere riding of noxious weeds in Horton’s, Creacey’s, Old Motueka, Mahana. and Dominion roads. The position in some areas was so bad that grading could not be done for weeds. Councillor Jones moved that it be left to the Engineer and staff to approach the settlers concerned to have the frontages cleared, and this was carried. STANLEY BROOK HILL Councillor L. A. Higgins asked whether the council would consider having some of the points taken off the Starftey Brook hill road. With the establishment of the new school at Tapawera, the school bus had to carry children over this road twice a day, and the road at present was in a very bad j^ate. Other councillors agreed that the work was needed, one member saying that the road was the worst in the county. The chairman said that he would prefer to see a deviation put through which would obviate the necessity of removing the points referred to. The engineer was requested to report to the next meeting on the possibility of making such a deviation in the road.
HEALTH INSPECTOR’S REPORT The Inspector of Health reported that since the last report the following cases of infectious diseases had been notified: —Cerebro-spinal meningitis, 2: para-typhoid fever. 1; erysipelas, 1; suspected typhoid (negative), 1. Of samples of milk taken for examination from supplies to the armed forces, colleges, primary schools and the general public, seven had failed to comply with the regulations. Non-com-pliance and warning notices were served on the vendors concerned. The question of improving the in- | sanitary conditions at Annesbrook caused by the discharge of waste matters from the Nelson abattoirs, skin casing works, the effluent from the septic tank provided for the use of the camp, and the drainage from the nightsoil depot in the same locality, had been investigated and enquired into ■by the medical officer, with a view to reducing the offensive odours in this area. Notices had been served on the parties concerned in discharging trade wastes into this tidal creek, also to the owner of the piggery in this locality to carry out improvements regarding the handling, storage and the boiling of offal, etc.
