ARMY PROMOTIONS

OFFICERS OVERSEAS ALL BLACK BRIGADIER The following appointments and promotions of officers of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas were gazetted last night:— Lieutenant-Colonel (acting-Brigadier) J. T. Burrows, to be brigadier (temporary) while commanding an infantry brigade. The following majors to be lieuten-ant-colonels (temporary) while commanding infantry battalions: R. W. Harding. M.M., C. L. Pleasants, M.C., and R. E. Romans. Major Barker is appointed to command the Maori Battalion, and is granted the temporary rank of lieu-tenant-colonel. Major (acting-Lieutenant-Colonel) D. J. Fountaine, M.C., is to be lieutenantcolonel (temporary) while commanding an infantry battalion. Captain R. S. Pearson to be major (temporary) while employed as bri-gade-major of an infantry brigade. Major (temporary-Lieutenant-Col-onel) C. M. Williamson, E.D., is to be lieutenant-colonel, and Major J. K. Robbie is to be lieutenant-colonel (temporary) while commanding a machinegun battalion. In the New Ordnance Corps, Colonel T. J. King is to be brigadier (temporary) while employed as De-puty-Director of Ordnance Services. General Headquarters, Middle East Forces. In the New Zealand Artillery. Majors J. M. Mitchell and R. C. Queree (temporary lieutenant-colonels) are gazetted lieutenant-colonels. Major W. A T. McGuire, of the New Zealand A.S.C., is gazetted lieutenantcolonel. In the New Zealand Railway Construction and Maintenance Group. Captain Christie to be major (temporary) while commanding the New Zealand Engineer and Ordnance Training Depot. Brigadier C. F. Weir, D. 5.0., New Zealand Artillery, is appointed ’officer in charge. New Zealand Artillery, Second N.Z.E.F., in addition to his present appointment. Lieutenant-Colonel A. H. Andrews, New Zealand Ordnance Corps, is appointed officer in charge. New Zealand Ordnance Corps, in addition to his present appointment. Major H. E. Crosse. M.C., is appointed to command the New Zealand Reception Depot. Major I. A. Hart is appointed second in command of the Maori Battalion. Major J. O. Kelsey, New Zealand Ordnance Corps, is appointed Staff Officer. Ordnance Services, Second N.Z.E.F. Majors H. M. McElrov. H. M. Green an d T. C. Campbell, M.C., are appointed respective second in command of three infantry battalions. Brigadier C. E. Weir, D. 5.0.. Royal New Zealand Artillery, is one of the youngest officers of his rank in the division. He was stationed in the Auckland area for about seven years before his departure in command of a field artillery regiment. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order recently for skill and gallantry in operations in Libya. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Leaving with the Main Body in 1914 Brigadier T. J. King, 0.8. E., fought at Gallipoli and at the end of the war held the rank of captain. He remained in the Permanent Forces and became Director of Ordnance Service, Trentham. He was educated at Waitaki and Otago Boys’ High Schools before entering the Marine Department. Acting-Brigadier J. T. Burrows is a former Canterbury and New Zealand Rugby representative. He went to South Africa with the 1928 All Blacks. An old boy of Christchurch Boys’ High School, he was a master there before joining thp Army at the outbreak of war. He left New Zealand with the First Echelon with the rank of captain. Lieutenant-Colonel W. A. T. McGuire is an officer in the Police Force on loan to the Army for the duration of the war. He was formerly a constable stationed at Auckland. When he entered the Police Force in 1932 Colonel McGuire held the rank of captain in the Territorials Later he commanded the Composite Company, New Zealand Army Service Corps.
