TAHUNANUI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Tahunanui Women’s Institute. The president, Mrs Douglas, extended a warm welcome to all, especially to Mrs Smith, Federation President. The motto “If we can’t make light of our troubles keep them dark,” was read by Mrs Horncastle. Apologies were received and correspondence and business dealt with. Mrs Rolling was chosen as delegate to the halfyearly Council meeting to be held in Nelson on 23rd October. Arrangements were discussed for the Institute’s ninth birthday party. It was decided that the usual birthday cake be dispensed with and instead two soldiers’ parcels be purchased with the money it would cost for the cake. After an enjoyable cup of tea served by Mrs Spencer and her hostesses, Mcsdames Hudson and Milner were introduced and spoke on the work ol the Crippled Children’s Society, nnd war work in London during the Great War, respectively. Both ladies were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Members of the gardening circle were invited to visit Mrs Milner’s garden nnd their next meeting is to take the form of a walk up the Zig Zag and visit the fernery. The roll call “A good joke” was well responded to and the proceeds ol the sales table and mystery parcels were donated to the Crippled Children’s Society. The competitions for the month resulted as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Douglas 2, Mrs Leighs 3: posy in egg cup. Mrs Colligan 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Kelling 3; pickled onions, Mrs Colligan 1; gift costing not more than Is, Mrs Douglas 1, Mrs Leighs 2. j The meeting was brought to a J close with the New Zealand Anthem.
