GIRL DELINQUENTS
SEPARATE CENTRE ADVOCATED Auckland, Aug. 10. The need for the establishment of a separate centre for girl delinquents, specially those suffering from venereal disease, was of compelling urgency in Auckland at present, stated Mr Luxford, S.M., at a sitting of the Children’s Court. The magistrate said a problem had arisen in the administration of the Child Welfare Act in consequence of the present wave of juvenile prostitutes. “The receiving homes are quite unsuitable for this class of juvenile,” said the magistrate. "Their presence in the homes is dangerous, both on medical and moral grounds. The others in the homes are not necessarily delinquents—some are being cared for by the State because they have no parents, or. if they have, the parents are neglecting their responsibilities. This is a special class of person, and organisation and training of tiie ‘staff’ of these homes has not been directed toward keeping in control and looking after this type of inmate. “I hope the Minister of Health and 'he Minister of Education, who is renonsiblo for child welfare, will have he matter inquired into without delay.” said Mr Luxford. —P.A.
