COLLECTING WASTE PAPER

COMPETITIVE METHOD IN BRITAIN’ The saving of waste paper in Britain has been stimulated by a series of contests between local authorities in England. Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland. Prizes in cash, provided by public-spirited organisations, are awarded to those local authorities in whose districts, in a given period, the heaviest weight of waste paper, books, and cartons, per thousand of population, is collected by the authorities themselves, by waste paper merchants, by voluntary organisations, or other means. Under the terms of the competitions, boroughs competed with boroughs, and urban districts with urban districts, but not borough with urban district, nor do rural districts compete with any but rural districts. The ultimate use to which the prize moneys are put is left entirely to the discretion of the successful local authorities. Three sums of £2500 were given as prizes in an area which included England, Wales and Northern Ireland, one sum each foi rural, borough and urban districts. A further sum of £2500 was allocated to Scotland. Experience of these competitions is reported to have shown that the amount of waste paper collected has been most gratifying.
