Garrison Ordered to Retire TRIBUTE TO FREE FRENCH DEFENDERS (Rec. 10.0 a.m.) Rugby, June 1 I. A special Middle Last war communique states: “On the orders of General Ritchie, the garrison at Bir Hacheim was withdrawn on the night of 10th and 1 Ith June. Free French troops of the garrison under General Koenig have for sixteen days fought off the largest ottacks by infantry, tanks and aircraft and have inflicted heavy losses on Axis forces. 1 hey have played a vital part in upsetting the enemy’s plans. Their magnificent fighting qualities have earned the admiration of the United Nations. ’ General De Gaulle yesterday visited Mr Churchill when the latter congratulated him upon the brilliant conduct in the field of the Free French forces at Bir Flacheim.

A Middle East Air communique states: “In the forward area of Cyren; ica our aircraft were again active. In Bir Hacheim area yesterday enemy concentrations and gun positions were effectively attacked. A large number of motor vehicles was destroyed and damaged. One Juß7 was shot down. Objectives in Crete were bombed last night. In 24 hours ending at midday, two Melo9’s were destroyed over Malta.
