PRESENT EGG SHORTAGE
j REASONS GIVEN BY POULTRY BOARD Wellington, This Day. High production costs brought about by the general economic conditions and lack of Government sympathy towards poultry keepers’ problems are given by the New Zealand Poultry Board as the main factor in the present egg shortage, when discussing the egg position yesterday. It was agreed that unless an official announcement of an adequate incerase in the flush season price was made production would continue to decline possibly to a point where hospital and other essential requirements could not be met. It is claimed that the demand for military purposes is less than it would be if the men were back in civil life and that the principal reason" for the decline in production, apart from poultry keepers joining the armed forces, is the decision of many to give up because of high production costs. The only way to maintain egg production. the board declares, is to give some inducement to keepers to remain in or return to the industry. A better flush season price would go far towards arresting the present decline in production and in time would right the whole position.—P.A.
