HISTORIC BUILDINGS DAMAGED J (Rec. noon.) Rugby, April 29. Sixty German aircraft bombed the t historic town of York, five being de- .; stroyed. The raid was not so heavy .j as against Norwich and Bath, but i ] parts of the city suffered heavily. * Though historic buildings were damag--1 ed. the historic cathedral was undamaged. It is believed that casual- ■! ties were comparatively light. > An enemy bomber harmlessly drop- • j ped bombs on the south-east coast of ] England last night. Besides the five raiders destroyed ij curing last night’s attack on York, another night raider was brought down ! off the north-east coast. A Basle message states that a Wilhehnstrasse spokesman, continuing the ; outbursts against the British bombing : offensive, threatened that the Luft- ! vafle would bomb Canterbury Cathedral. Windsor Castle, and England's •j Tudor mansions. ; He alleged that the British bombers .} machine-gunned Rostock, killing and ij v ounding many firemen and policemen, and preventing fire-fighting and rescue Berlin radio claimed that German bombers last night made low-level attacks on shipyards in the Isle of Wight, j causing heavy damage. Shortly before dusk yesterday even- ] ir.g one of our fighters intercepted and •i destroyed a German bomber off th» j north coast of Cornwall. —8.0. W.
