PROVINCIAL COUNCIL MEETS REQUESTS FROM CAMPS At a meeting of the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council yesteiday afternoon there were present the Mayor (Mr ]•: R. Neale), Messrs J. Corder, A. R. TulTncll. G. R. McKellar. A. H. Crawley, C. R. Fell, J. G. McKay, J. A. Harley, and the lion, secretary, Mr F. Mitl chell. ! A verbal request was received for 1 badges for football jerseys supplied to 1 . the Nelson Regiment, but members 1 were not in favour of providing badges ( and no action was taken, i Accounts totalling £4166 19s lid wore : passed for payment. These include ! £4030 for the National Fund Board. The secretary’s action in assisting two ' returned soldiers was approved. The Opotiki Inter-Zone Patriotic Committee wrote suggesting that all ' patriotic committees adopt as their j slogan, “We can give it.” The letter ; ' was received. RADIO APPEAL 1 The National Patriotic Fund Board ( j wrote in connection with a radio tele- ' j phone appeal for patriotic funds, asking lor the council's support. The use j of Empire Day (23rd May) was sugges- 1 i ted as the date. It was stated that ne- ' gotiations were proceeding regarding ' ! the lifting of the ban on the broadcasting of names and amounts. The council agreed to the proposal ' provided the ban on names was lifted and that the local radio station be used REQUEST FOR FURNITURE i Lieut.-Colonel C. M. Rout wrote ap- ' | plying for furniture for the officers’ and sergeants’ mess for the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast Regiment. 1 1 Comforts in the way of furniture, car- 1 pets and pianos were mentioned. . j The letter had been referred to the 1 ! National Patriotic Fund Board and the A secretary replied that the matter had ; been referred to the Marlborough Pro- 1 : wncial Patriotic Council. The board * | had granted £2OO for similar expendi- . j ture in Marlborough camps. It was ; stated that carpets and pianos were too j • | expensive and the board requested j tnat they be not supplied. j j It was decided to notify Marlborough j that Nelson was anxious to help and j was prepared to assist in any reason- ( able expenditure not met by the Na- y tional Board. It was also suggested that j the Westland committee be approached, y At the suggestion of the National , Board householders are to be asked foi breakfast cups, which are not I cracked, for recreational huts at camps, j MUFTI ALLOWANCE 1 . i The National Board advised that the ' War Cabinet had approved of the pay- ! ment of mufti allowance of £l2 10s to ‘ i members of the navy and air force returning from overseas—payment to be • made retrospective to the outbreak of t v ar - The War Cabinet had also approved a mufti allowance of £7 30s to members of the navy, army, and air force who had not served overseas, a! conditional on fu’i ’ime continuous ser_ ljV-ce for 12 months prior to discharge, t j This approval, as far as the army is - concerned, covers the following seci tions of the army: Territorial force. ? ! 'temporary stall, temporary employment tj section, guards at vital points, N.Z, e J Army Nursing Service, N.Z. Women’s LV/ar Service Auxiliary, and Home it Guard. It was agreed to purchase a soccer _ ball and jerseys for the 15th Independ- " i ent Infantry Company.
