A NELSON CHRONOLOGY 9th April. 1842: “Mr Co tie re II came on a pah * in the j Waimeas) after burning the flax. It is j described as being very similar to a Roman Camp, one side being formed by the steep bank of a tributary stream of the Weiti (Wai-iti): the remainder being protected by a ditch and cat them rampart. This pah is called Pohare aftei a chief or tribe. It does not seem very clear to which the name belonged.
