Tourist Resorts Seriously Affected Restrictions on load travel and the! absence of overseas visitors have seri-j c.usiy affected the seasonal revenue oi tourist resorts (states the "N.Z. Herald’). One well-known country hotel that used to cater for large holiday clientele and transient tourists has practically closed down, only a skele'oi staff being maintained, and others in ; hkc case are expected L» follow suit.! The more popular tourists areas have been the chief sufferers and their posi - j lion under the regulations is unlikely; unsiderable time, unless the Govern-j ment by some means comes lo their as- j sislance. Most of the smaller countiyj hotels, which 'open ’ for their trade on j a regular local clientele and commercial traffic rather than upon scenic attrac- i Lons, are simdarly situated, although! none claims that the war situation has! b’-ought the licensee to the verge ol'j ruin. On the other hand ,a comparatively few hoi els which have been favourably situated in respect to military dispositions have reaped a great harvest, their sole complaint being a shortage of certain supplies. The development of tourist resorts in New Zealand! has been undertaken by successive! Governments rather than by private enterprise, so public revenue will be the chief sufferer from the present stale of affairs.
