A FINE VIEW OBSTRUCTED
ITo the Editor 1 Sir, Afte.- an absence of 45 years from Nelson. 1 returned for the CenI tennial celebrations, accompanied by a sister all the way from Queenstown to do honour to our parents who arrived in Nelson in 1842. We think the limited celebrations were very successful and thanks are due to the committee who had charge. The historic Church Hill, with its fine steps and paths and beautiful flowers and shrubs, is a wonderful asset to the city and combined with all the other beauty spots makes “Sunny Nelson” the pride of all those who left it years ago. But there is “a fly in the ointment!” We allotted Sunday morn'ng for a view of the City from the Zig-Zag Hill at the Botanical Gardens, but our anticipated pleasure was spoilt. Why have the citizens allowed a lot of old, ugly and useless pine trees to obstruct the very line view that used to be obtained from this hill? From about half-way up and continuing to the top all the centre portion of the view of the City is blotted out These trees which cannot by any stretch be called ornamental or useful, should be removed, the timber from them sold (and this would probably pay the costs) and native shrubs planted in their places and thus bring this ■ portion of beautiful Nelson into line. I trust that some of your citizens will ; take up this matter and hope that when i 1 return for the deferred celebrations after the war 1 will find that these im- : movements have been effected.—l am < etc., , “OLD NELSONIAN.” < Titahi Bay. 15th Feb.
