HEAVY FIGHTING
ENEMY DEFEATED IN PAAN AREA CHARGE AT POINT OF BAYONET ' (Rec., 11.5 a.m.) Rugby. Feb.. 12. A Rangoon communique states: “After heavy fighting an enemy attack on our positions in the Paan area was j defeated. The situation is now much i quieter and the enemy appears to have { temporarily abandoned operations in that area. Our casualties were not j heavy. “During fighting in the Martaban area a company of the King’s Own Yorkshire light infantry got to close quarters with the enemy and charged them at the point of the bayonet. The enemy fled, throwing away weapons and suffering considerable casualties. ‘ No air raids over Burma have been j reported during the pa„i night. Yester- ; day morning enemy aircraft attacked j our troops in the Martaban sector. In i support of our land forces our bombers, escorted by Allied fighters, attacked enemy positions in forward sectors during the morning of 11th February. In the afternoon our bombers carried out an attack on Japanese forces at Moulmein and on the river Salween. All our aircraft returned safely. Reconnaissances over enemy territory were carried out during the day.
