AFTER THE WAR
DISPOSAL OF SURPLUS STORES ! The problem of disposing of vast j quantities of Government stores and [equipment of various kinds after th.* ! war is now being seriously considered j in the United Kingdom and the London Chamber of Commerce has forwarded j to the Prime Minister a report embod> - ling its views on the subject, says j (cable from the Federation of Chambers jof Commerce to the New Zealand Associated Chambers of Commerce After the last war. surplus stores to l the value of many millions of pounds sterling remained for disposal both in I this country and overseas and several !years elapsed before this was finally effected. One of the points embodied in the report is that the disposal of sur--1 plus stocks should not, as in the past, I destroy markets and postpone the (restoration of normal industrial acjtivity, Lut should be used to create new markets —for example, surplus road (making equipment and lorries, if presented or sold at a nominal price to undeveloped Crown colonies and other I countries, would create a future market (for motor and ancillary industries, injstead of choking existing rna.kets. (Stocks of other stores could be held to assist in maintaining the stability of I the price structure. j It is suggested that the work of dis ! posal should be entrusted to a number !of non-profit-making commodity dis posal companies, consisting of manu facturers and merchants, together with Government and trade union representatives.—P.A.
