PAY FOR HOLIDAYS

TEACHERS WHO SERVED WITH MILITARY FORCES Christchurch, Feb. 12. j Teachers who served with any of the military forces during the Christmas and New Year holidays will receive both military and civil pay for the period of the holidays. An announcement that this decision had just • been reached was made by the ■ Director of Education. Dr Beeby. today. I It was explained earlier by the secretary of the Canterbury Educa- • tion Board. Mr L. E. Rowley, who ' had not been advised of the decision. i that as the teachers’ year ended on l -.lst January, a teacher was. normally ! speaking, entitled to receive ordinary • pay to that time throughout the holi--1 cays. In the present case of teachers 1 who had been called into camp with ; the National Military Reserve or ■ ether military forces over the holi--1 days, the teachers serving had not re- ; ceived the usual pay. but the board . 1 ad. as instructed, paid the difference 1 between the men’s military and civil p; >. Mr Rowley cl- dined to comment on |ihe equity of this position. He said : that yuite a number of teachers m ; the board’s district had been in camp from the start of the holidays, about 19th December, or from later periods during the holidays. Announcing toe new decision. Dr. Beeby said teachers had felt some sense of grievance that they were los ing civil holiday pay which they thought they had earned. The decision applied as from Ist December. It applied to the holidays only, so that if a teacher wore to remain in | camp, having entered during the last 1 holidays, his ordinary civil pay would ; continue only til) 31st January. The principle, however, would also apply | for future school holidays. Dr ! Beeby said the decision would affect ! training college lecturers and second j ary and technical as well as primary ) school teachers.
