PETROL SUPPLIES
PRIVATE C AR ALLOWANCE REQUESTED TAKAKA COUNTY COUNCIL'S RESOLUTION That it. is in the interests of public safety and essential in order to assure the efficiency of the Emergency Precautions Service that private car own ers should be allowed sufficient petrol ic keep their cars in reasonably good running order to meet any demands that might be made on them during a period of actual emergency, was the attitude adopted by the Takaka County Council at its meeting this week. Councillor P. V. Langford brought forward the matter for consideration, drawing attention to the serious situation that would face the E.P.S. and the civilian population generally, if in the event of trouble. 90 per cent, of the private cars were unable to be taken out of their garages because of fiat batteries and other mechanical deficiencies brought about by prolonged disuse. He 1 advocated following the lead of the | Takaka E.P.S. committee by approaching those in control of the Dominion’s petrol supplies with a request for a small allowance for private, car owners on the grounds indicated. Supporting the yiew that the council I should act in the matter, the chairman. Councillor A. H. Rose, said that the Nelson district appeared to be more j severely restricted in the matter of 1 petrol than other parts of the Domin- | ion. "They ar? getting at least some ; petrol in other districts.” he added, “so j v. hy not here?” \ Similar opinions were expressed by ' other councillors, and it was resolved : that the council write to the Minister of Supply and the Dominion Oil Fuel Controller asking for petrol to be made available to private car owners to keep their vehicles in running order and prevent rapid depreciation of motors, so as to ensure their being of use in the event of an emergency.
