TREATY SIGNED
BRITAIN AND ETHIOPIA AGREEMENT AND MILITARY CONVENTION (Rec. 9.50 a.m.) Rugby, Feb. 3. It is stated authoritatively in London that a treaty has been signed between Britain and Ethiopia, taking the form of an agreement and military convention. The agreement restores normal diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Ethiopia, and Mr R. G. Howe is proceeding forthv ith to Addis Ababa as His Majesty's Minister. The Government will do its best to accede to the Emperor’s request for a small number of British officials tc proceed to Abyssinia with the duty of assisting the Emperor in the restoration of his administration. The duration of the agreement is two years. The Emperor during the first year will be financed by His Majesty’s Government to the extent of £1.500,000 and £1.000.000 during the second year. The arrangement was designed to ensure that the dependence of Ethiopia on a foreign country should not be perpetuated. The Emperor had also asked for a loan to assist in the reorganisation of his armed forces, and also for such British forces as it may be necessary to maintain in Ethiopia for strategic reasons.
