ENEMY IN JEDABAYA
LARGE BOMBER AND FIGHTER ESCORT Light British Forces Retire NAZI TROOPS PROVIDE GOOD TARGETS ( Rec. 10.30 a.m.) Rugby, Jan. 23. A communique issued from Cairo headquarters states: “Early yesterday morning the enemy columns which had moved eastwards from the area south of Mersa Brega on the previous day continued their forward movement, strongly covered by German and Italian bombers with fighter protection. By evening our light forces had withdrawn to the east of Jedabya which the enemy re-occupied. “During the course of the day’s operations, our air forces and artillery were presented with a number of good targets. In particular two concentrations of enemy mechanical transport in the area southwest of Jedabya were heavily and successfully bombecj and machinegunned. Many casualties were observed to have been inflicted upon the enemy. “Jedabya, in south-western Cyrenaica, is 73 miles east of LI Agh eila, to which the enemy recently withdrew.’’—B.O.W.
