LIGHTING RESTRICTIONS IN GOLDEN BAY

CONTROLLER REVIEWS POSITION A warning that a general tightening up of the lighting restrictions could be expected in the near future* and that persistent offenders against the regulations would be made to "toe the line” was issued by the Takaka and Collingwood Lighting Controller (Mr J. P. Cottier) at Monday night’s special meeting of the Takaka Emergency Precautions’ Services Committee. Reviewing what had been done to more rigidly enforce the restrictions since Japan's entry into the war. Mr Cottier said that residents had been notified by advertisement of their obligations under the Lighting Restrictions’ Emergency Regulations, wardens had been appointed, and generally speaking, owners and occupiers of dwellings and ; business premises were facing up to j their responsibilities satisfactorily. ; There were, however, several cases j where persons were failing to comply j with the regulations. The policy of the I local Lighting Committee would be to ) give these people a little more time. [ and if the breaches persisted, then an j example would have to be mode of the ■ offenders. The committee had no de- ! sire to take action hastily, and everything possible was being done to educate the people to their responsibilities , urder the regulations. Replying to questions, the controller , said that Takaka was a sky-glow area, i that is. an area not directly visible from the open sea. and the regulations rei quirecl that every room lighted at night . : ! lime must have blinds fully drawn over each window and fanlight. The coni troller also stressed the necessity of each householder having at least one ■ room completely blacked-out for use ; in an emergency. i Mr Cottier also made it clear that the use of flashlamps for floundering ex- : peditions on the foreshore, and the ; lighting of bonfires or scrub fires which [ would be visible at night constituted breaches of the regulations. Takaka, : he said, had not yet had a trial black- • out, but it was intended to arrange one l ai a later date.
